Bret Harte letter : New York, N.Y., to Ambrose Bierce, Calif., 1871 Mar. 5.

Manuscript letter, signed by Harte, discussing details of recent favorable financial agreements he has made for his writing, speaking, and publishing work. He speaks disparagingly of Californians and asks Bierce to keep the details of the letter confidential because "I do not care for the Californians generally to know of my good fortune from me." Ambrose Bierce was born in Horse Cave Creek, Ohio, on June 24, 1842. After military service in the Civil War, he settled in San Francisco, where he met Mark Twain and became a columnist and writer. Bierce became known for his sharp, sarcastic wit while writing for the "Argonaut," the "Wasp," and the "San Francisco Examiner."
